Designing NYC
Re-Thinking the NYC Firehydrant
New York City is full of iconic structures that have not changed in centuries, one we experience every day is the side walk fire hydrant. The short plug version has its charm, however we think it could be better.
Can we rethink the purpose all together, make the protection poles on either side more attaractive and can the hydrant be more than an emergency sources of water. What happens in the snow storms and when the street plows create ten foot drifts on the sidewalk or a car parks illegally in front of a hydrant. How can we make the structure more modern, with multiple functions.
First think of it as not a fire hydrant but a water station for emergencies, for thirsty people and for pets. Then create a structure that is both recognizable and beautiful. Finally create a universal symbol that identifies the hydrant to multiple languages.
